Katie Starr
Class of 2006
Favourite Subject in high school: French, English, History
Favourite Teachers: Mr. Lavigne, Ms. Frayne, Mr. Cunningham
What was she involved with at Doyle (clubs, teams, etc.)?
Cross-country, Track, Swim team, SAC, Social Justice Club, Key Club, annual musical, Healthy Choices Club
What did she do after graduating from Monsignor Doyle?
After graduating from Doyle, Katie studied history, French and Russian at Western University (King’s College) where she lifeguarded and taught swimming lessons on campus. After graduating in 2010, she taught English for a year in Russia – a country she had dreamed of living in since she was 12 and read a book about Anastasia Romanov. After Russia, Katie returned to Western for her Master’s in Journalism (2013) and then started off her career as a reporter interning at her hometown paper (the Waterloo Region Record) and then starting up a new community paper in Norfolk County.
What is she doing now?
Katie is now a television producer in the CBC’s parliamentary bureau in Ottawa, for the show Power & Politics. As a TV producer, she pitches story ideas, chases the perfect voice to speak to a topic, researches the issue, pre-interviews the guests, and books the resources and cameras. Then, she writes what is called “the green” – the questions the show’s host will ask the guest. She brief the host on the topic and on anything else, from how to pronounce the guest’s name to the ins and outs of South African politics. After the show, Katie is responsible for cutting, editing and posting video online to the CBC website and podcasts. TV producers wear many hats, and every day is different, but the goal is always the same – 2 hours of live TV delivering the political news Canadians need.
The Power & Politics studio: (the CBC’s Rob Brown interviewing the President of Colombia)
What are some of her other career accomplishments?
Besides writing (and politics), Katie’s big passion in life is running. She’s run five marathons, with a personal best time of 3:10, an ultra-marathon where she placed fourth in the National Trail 50K Championships, and many half-marathons, including one in Finland! Katie is currently training for her second Boston Marathon, and credits her amazing coaches at Doyle (Mr. Cunningham, Ms. Denys, Ms. Johnson and Mrs. Sharpley) for their encouragement to always chase down your dreams.
Katie’s advice to current Doyle students
“Take risks and keep your faith. I got an offer to come work in Ottawa at the CBC for two weeks, starting in just a few days, with no guarantee of work beyond those two weeks. I knew in order to take my career to the next stage, I had to take this opportunity. In today’s job market, playing it safe won’t help you achieve your goals. Also, hold onto the strong faith roots Doyle helps give you. The next ten years of your life after high school can be scary and full of lots of questions, but I never felt worse after going to church or praying for guidance.”
With the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi. I produced the interview with him last fall.

~ Class of 1991 ~
Favourite Subject in high school: English
Favourite Teachers: Mr. Lynch
What did she do after graduating from Monsignor Doyle?
Tanya attended the University of Western Ontario and obtained her Honor’s degree in Sociology. Right after graduation she got a job in the transportation industry and enjoyed a successful career for nearly 10 years before becoming pregnant with her son. Always wanting to be able to have a flexible schedule once she had children, Tanya decided to train in something that was more of a passion than a “job” and became an Alternative Health Care practitioner in 2006.
What is she doing now?
A registered reflexologist, doula and educator, Tanya is also co-owner of Soul Treatments Wellness here in Cambridge. She has specialized her clinical practice in the health of women and children. In addition, she is now the owner of The Healing Arts Learning Organization – a training organization dedicated to the personal growth and development of alternative health care practitioners – so that she can help others recognize their life passions and follow their dreams to success. Her son, who is now finishing grade 2, loves that his mom can go on school trips and do homework with him, and, to Tanya, that is the beauty of life.
Tanya’s advice to current Doyle students
“Never be afraid to follow your heart toward your dreams. Goals can change, and life can take you in a different direction; but, if your passion is greater than your fear, you will come out successful at the end of it.”

Sean’s advice to current Doyle students:
“No-one hires solely based on credentials anymore. A good way to live your life is to develop a passion for something, then gain experience in that field and furthermore study and educate yourself to make you an expert. Great Managers/CEO/Business Owners hire for Passion first, experience second, and credentials third. Be the person with 100% in the first two categories, and at least 80-85% in your credentials and you’ll get the job every time! Showing you have the passion and experience but can always learn more along the way will speak for itself!
